How to Travel the Maldives on a Budget: A Local's Guide to Affordable Island Hopping

Think the Maldives is only for luxury resorts and honeymooners? Think again.

The Maldives can be an affordable destination for solo travellers, couples and backpackers. You do not need to spend thousands of dollars on a private island resort to enjoy white sandy beaches, turquoise lagoons, snorkelling and the warmth of Maldivian island life.

The secret is simple: stay on local islands, use the MTCC public ferries, eat where locals eat, and plan your journey around the ferry schedule.

It is easier than it sounds. At Atolliva Maldives we help travellers discover the more affordable side of the Maldives, and if you get stuck, ask us and we will direct you.

Quick answer: how do you reach Maafushi, Gulhi and Dhiffushi cheaply?

  1. Land at Velana International Airport.
  2. Take the airport ferry to Malé (about 10 minutes, around MVR 15).
  3. Go to the Henveiru Ferry Terminal and buy your MTCC public ferry ticket with cash.
  4. Take Route 309 to Gulhi or Maafushi, or Route 308 to Dhiffushi.
  5. Remember: there are no public ferries on Fridays.

Which days do the MTCC ferries run?

Route Islands served Ferries run No ferry
| Route 309  | Malé, Gulhi, Maafushi, Guraidhoo  | Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday  | Friday
| Route 308  | Malé, Himmafushi, Huraa, Thulusdhoo, Dhiffushi  | Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday  | Friday

Both routes run Saturday to Thursday under the MTCC schedule effective 1 August 2026. On Friday you will need a shared speedboat or a private transfer, or you can arrive in Malé the day before and travel the day after.

1. Stay on local islands instead of luxury resorts

One of the easiest ways to reduce your travel costs is to choose a local island guesthouse instead of a private island resort.

Local islands offer guesthouses, cafés, restaurants, beaches and organised excursions at a range of prices. You can enjoy many of the same natural attractions without paying luxury resort rates.

Maafushi: best for activities and convenience

Maafushi is a great starting point for first-time visitors. You can find a range of guesthouses, restaurants, water sports, snorkelling trips, sandbank excursions and other activities. It is particularly suitable for couples and solo travellers who want plenty to do without arranging everything themselves.

Gulhi: ideal for a quieter beach escape

Gulhi is a smaller island with a relaxed atmosphere and beautiful beaches. It suits travellers looking for a slower pace and a few peaceful days by the sea.

Dhiffushi: a laid-back island experience

Dhiffushi offers beautiful beaches and a calm island atmosphere. It is a good option for travellers who want to slow down, enjoy the ocean and experience everyday island life.

Our tip: You do not need to visit every island. Choosing one or two and spending a few nights on each can save money on transfers and give you more time to enjoy your holiday.

2. Save money with MTCC public ferries

This is one of the most useful budget-travel tips for the Maldives.

The Maldives has a public ferry network operated by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), under the Raajje Transport Link (RTL) network. Public ferries are much cheaper than private speedboats. The trade-off is that they run on fixed schedules and take longer.

Tickets are bought at the terminal, so carry cash in Maldivian Rufiyaa. Recent traveller reports put fares at around MVR 22 (roughly USD 1.50) per person on these routes. Confirm the current fare at the ticket counter.

Important: These are planning references, not a guarantee of service. Times, operating days, terminals and routes can change, and ferries can be delayed or cancelled in bad weather or around public holidays. Always confirm on the official MTCC schedules page, the Raajje Transport Link (RTL) website or with your guesthouse before you travel.

A few things to know before taking a public ferry

  • Arrive at the correct terminal early and allow time to buy your ticket.
  • There is no public ferry on Friday. Plan arrival and departure days around it.
  • Some island-to-island trips mean going back through Malé. Do not assume every island connects directly.
  • Each route has only one ferry in each direction per day. If you miss it, you wait until the next operating day.
  • If you land late in the day, you may need a night in Malé or Hulhumalé before catching the next ferry.
  • The morning ferries reach Malé at 09:05 to 09:15, so we do not recommend an early flight on the same morning. Choose a flight in the afternoon or later, or stay near the airport the night before.

Public ferries work best when you have time and flexibility. If your holiday is short, a shared speedboat may be worth the extra cost.

3. Plan your excursions wisely

You do not need to book a separate excursion every day to enjoy the Maldives. Choose the experiences that matter most to you:

  • Snorkelling on a coral reef
  • Visiting a sandbank
  • Swimming in clear lagoons
  • Dolphin-watching trips
  • Exploring nearby local islands
  • A simple beach day with no organised activity

Ask your guesthouse or local travel agent about shared trips. Joining a group is often more economical than hiring a private boat. Always check what is included in the price, such as equipment, transfers and meals.

4. Eat local and keep your food budget under control

Food becomes a big expense if you eat every meal at tourist-focused restaurants. Local cafés and restaurants often offer more affordable meals. Try traditional dishes such as mas huni with roshi for breakfast, or local fish and rice. Before you book, check whether breakfast is included and whether there are affordable places to eat nearby.

5. Travel as a couple or solo traveller without overspending

Travelling alone does not mean you cannot enjoy the Maldives on a budget. Solo travellers can choose a modest guesthouse, use public transport and join shared excursions. Couples can save by sharing a room and planning activities together.

  • Compare the total cost of accommodation and transfers, not just the room price.
  • Choose an island with the activities you want instead of paying for many transfers.
  • Book ahead during busy periods.
  • Keep your plan flexible enough to use the cheaper public ferry.
  • Never schedule a public ferry just before an international flight.

6. A simple budget-friendly Maldives itinerary

An example five-night plan, travelling on a Saturday to Thursday so the ferries run:

Day Plan
| Day 1  | Land in Malé, take the 15:00 Route 309 ferry to Maafushi (arrive 16:40)
| Days 2 to 3  | Enjoy Maafushi: snorkelling, a sandbank trip, local food
| Day 4  | Travel on to Gulhi for a quieter beach stay
| Day 5  | Relax on Gulhi
| Day 6  | Take the 07:50 ferry from Gulhi back to Malé (arrive 09:05), with an afternoon or evening flight

This is only an example. The best plan depends on your flight times, the ferry days and guesthouse availability. Tell us your dates and we will build it with you.

7. How much does a budget trip to the Maldives cost?

There is no single budget that works for everyone. To estimate your costs, calculate these five items:

  1. Accommodation for every night
  2. Transfers between the airport, Malé and your islands
  3. Daily meals and drinks
  4. Excursions and activities
  5. A small buffer for emergencies and transport changes

A cheaper room is not always the cheapest overall option if it needs expensive transfers or is far from the activities you want. Compare the complete itinerary before you decide.
