Thoddoo on a Budget: Solo, Couples and Groups

The Maldives does not have to mean a private-island budget. On Thoddoo, a small farming island in North Ari Atoll, you can stay in a family-run guest house, eat local food, cycle through the fields and still take a boat out to see mantas and sandbanks. It is one of the best-value islands we send guests to.

Why Thoddoo is easy on the wallet

Thoddoo is about 75 minutes by speedboat from Velana Airport. The island is flat and compact, so you walk or cycle instead of paying for transport. Guest houses here are small and personal, and the farms mean fresh fruit is everywhere. Smart ways to keep the cost down

• Stay in a guest house. A room with breakfast on a local island costs a fraction of a resort. Ale Sara Guest House has 12 rooms around a garden courtyard, with single, double and triple rooms.
• Choose the right meal plan. Breakfast only leaves you free to try local cafés. Half board or full board makes sense if you want to plan your spending.
• Share a room. Triple rooms make a group trip much cheaper per person.
• Pick your excursions. Do not try to do everything. Choose two or three: a sandbank and snorkelling trip, a manta outing and a farm tour. Sightings are never guaranteed, and guides follow the conditions of the day.
• Book the transfer with the stay. Speedboat seats are limited. We match the boat to your flight so you do not lose a night to a bad connection.
• Bring some cash. There is one ATM on the island, so carry some for small shops and cafés.
• Avoid peak weeks if you can. The dry season (about December to April) has the calmest seas, but rates are lower outside holiday weeks.

Travelling solo

Thoddoo is a friendly place to arrive alone. The island is small, people say hello, and the guest house team can group you with other guests on boat trips so you share the cost of an excursion instead of paying for a private one.

Travelling as a couple

Quiet beaches, sunset on the west side and a boat trip at dawn are all within a short walk of your room. We can add a simple candlelit dinner or a private sandbank outing if you want a special evening without a resort price.

Travelling in a group

Friends and family groups get the most from Thoddoo. Triple rooms, shared boat trips and a single transfer for the whole group bring the cost per person down. Tell us your group size and dates and we will plan the rooms, boats and trips together.

Respecting the island

Thoddoo is a real community. Cover your shoulders and knees in the village and around the farms, and ask before picking fruit or photographing people. No alcohol is sold on the island, and Friday is the prayer day, when some shops close for part of it. Swimwear is for the designated tourist beaches only.
